About cockroaches

Why they keep coming back

You see one cockroach on the bench at night. There are usually dozens you do not see, tucked behind the fridge motor, in the kickboard gaps, and along the pipe runs in the wall. German cockroaches breed fast and stay close to warmth and food. That is why a surface spray in the cupboard rarely fixes it. We bait the harbourage where they actually live, not just where you spotted one. Sydney apartments and terrace kitchens are perfect for them. Warm, compact, and full of gaps behind appliances.

Identification

Signs of cockroaches

Cockroaches hide all day, so you usually find the evidence first. Check for these four.

Sightings at night

Turn on the kitchen light after dark. If you see one, there are almost certainly more nearby.

Small dark droppings

Look like ground pepper in cupboard corners, along skirting, and behind appliances.

Egg cases in gaps

Small brown capsules tucked into hinge gaps, behind the fridge, or in the back of drawers.

A musty oily smell

A heavy infestation leaves a distinctive smell in cupboards and under sinks. You notice it before you see them.

Prevention

How to keep cockroaches out

None of this needs a technician. Cockroaches need food, water, and a gap to hide in.

  • Cockroaches do not mean your kitchen is dirty
  • Grease behind appliances is their main food source
  • A dripping tap keeps a colony alive
  • Seal gaps and you remove half the harbourage

Not sure what you are looking at? Call 1300 160 325 and we will talk you through it.

Clean behind appliances

Pull out the fridge and oven once a month. Grease and crumbs in those gaps feed cockroaches year round.

Empty bins every night

A bin with a loose lid under the sink is a cockroach buffet.

Fix dripping taps

Cockroaches can survive on very little water. A slow drip under the sink is enough.

Store food in sealed containers

Cardboard boxes and open packets in the pantry are easy access.

Seal gaps around pipes

Silicone around pipe entries and kickboard edges closes harbourage cockroaches rely on.

Check grocery bags

Cockroaches and egg cases can arrive in packaging from shops, especially from bulk stores.

Who needs this

Who we treat for cockroaches

Any kitchen can get cockroaches. These are the places we are called to most in Sydney.

  • German cockroaches love warm compact kitchens
  • One affected unit can spread through a block
  • A single sighting can fail a food audit

Not listed here? We treat cockroaches in any Sydney property. Call 1300 160 325.

Why do cockroaches keep coming back?

Because the harbourage and food source were not removed. Cockroaches hide in wall gaps, behind appliances, and along pipe runs. If those spots are not baited and the grease buildup is not addressed, a new population moves in within weeks.

How do I know if I have German cockroaches?

German cockroaches are small, about 13 to 16mm, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head. You see them in the kitchen at night, especially near the fridge, oven, and dishwasher. Larger cockroaches in the bathroom or laundry are usually a different species.

Is cockroach gel bait safe around kids and pets?

Professional gel is applied in tiny amounts inside gaps, hinge cavities, and behind appliances where children and pets cannot reach. Your technician shows you every placement before leaving.

Can I get rid of cockroaches myself?

Supermarket sprays kill what you see but miss the colony in the wall gap. Baits work better if placed correctly in harbourage zones. Most recurring kitchen problems in Sydney need professional inspection to find every nesting spot.

How long does cockroach treatment take to work?

Gel bait starts working within days as cockroaches feed and share it through the colony. You may see more at first as they come out of harbourage. Activity should drop noticeably within one to two weeks.

Do cockroaches mean my house is dirty?

No. Cockroaches need warmth, food, and a gap to hide in. Even clean kitchens have grease behind the fridge and crumbs in kickboard gaps. They are common in Sydney apartments regardless of how often you mop.

Can cockroaches come from neighbours?

Yes, especially in unit blocks. They travel along shared pipe runs, through wall cavities, and under doors. Treating your unit alone may not be enough if the source is next door.

How do I prepare for cockroach treatment?

Clear benchtops, empty the bin, and pull the fridge out if you can. Do not spray anything before we arrive, because that repels cockroaches away from the bait we place.

Do you treat restaurants and commercial kitchens?

Yes. We work around trading hours, use low-odour products where needed, and provide written service records for your food safety audit.

Cockroach profile

The detail behind the advice above, for anyone who wants it.

AppearanceGerman cockroaches are 13 to 16mm long, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head. Larger American cockroaches reach 35 to 40mm and are reddish brown.
LifestyleThey are most active at night. You flick on the kitchen light and they scatter. During the day they stay in dark, warm gaps within a few metres of food and water.
HabitsGerman cockroaches squeeze into gaps 3mm wide. Fridge motors, oven housings, kickboards, and dishwasher surrounds are their favourite Sydney kitchen spots.
Why they matterCockroaches spread bacteria across food surfaces and trigger allergies in some people. In a food business, even one sighting can mean a failed inspection.

Saw a cockroach? Do this

Three things that help before we arrive.

Do not empty the cupboards

Moving everything to another room spreads cockroaches and egg cases into new harbourage.

Note where you saw it

The time, the room, and the exact spot. That tells us where to start the inspection.

Wipe the bench but leave the gaps

Clean surfaces help, but do not pull out appliances or spray into gaps before we have inspected.
